IS IT TIME TO CONSIDER REPLACING YOUR WINDOWS?
IS IT TIME TO CONSIDER REPLACING YOUR WINDOWS? JELD-WEN TELLS US WHAT SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR…
There comes a time when things need replacing – and windows are no exception. The difficulty comes with knowing when it’s the right time to order replacement windows. This handy list from JELD-WEN, one of the largest UK’s timber window manufacturer, will help highlight when you may need to change.
DRAFT AND COLD AIR
One of the biggest indicators that it’s time to replace the windows in your home is if they stop performing efficiently and start letting air in. If you have single glazing at the moment, making the switch to double or triple glazing will keep more cold air out and warm air in.
If you have double glazing, remember that it becomes less efficient as it gets older. A good test is to run your hands around the window frame – if you feel a draft – it’s a sign that the window is no longer working as it should.
HIGH ENERGY BILLS
Window replacements can save you money on your heating bill – up to £155 a year according to the UK Government. Windows that are more energy efficient keep the heat in your home and save your heating system from working overtime.
Different windows have different energy ratings, so if you’re replacing them to reduce your bills, make sure you choose new windows with a high rating to offset the replacement costs.
CONDENSATION
There are a number of things that can cause condensation. The first is when condensation forms on the internal-facing glass in your windows – this happens when warm air from your house settles on the cold surface of your glass windows. This could be remedied with better ventilation, and higher-quality windows.
Our windows are fitted with internal vents as standard, which help improve ventilation when used.
The most severe type of condensation is the type that forms between the two panes of glass – this means your double glazing has failed. If you have condensation between the panes of double glazed windows, your windows need replacing.
WATER LEAKS
If you have water around your window, chances are the exterior casing has an issue and isn’t protecting your windows as it should. Water leaks can lead to damp spots, rot wooden windows and sills, and cause other issues in your home.
Depending on the type of window, you may be able to replace the casing, or it could be time to replace the existing window.
WINDOW AGE
There’s no ‘correct’ time to replace your windows because there are a variety of factors that can affect a window frame’s lifespan. The type of window, how well it was installed and the types of materials used all contribute.
Local reputable fitters are easy enough to find, if you know where to look. FENSA is a government-backed scheme that means windows (and doors) meet building regulations and gives you a certificate. Have a look at the FENSA website to find a fitter.

POOR OPERATION
Windows that don’t open or close properly can be frustrating – it’s also a sign that the window isn’t performing as it should. So, if any of your windows are difficult to open, won’t stay open, are stiff or the handles are tricky, then replacing them could be the way forward.
DAMAGE AND DECAY
Windows can get scuffed and a little messy, but there’s a difference between light wear and tear and lasting damage. Even premium window frames will deteriorate over time so it’s important to give your windows a good inspection at least once a year, especially if they are old. Wooden window frames can rot and develop mould and uPVC ones can decay.
FADING FURNITURE
Fading furniture might not be the most obvious sign that you need to think about replacing your windows but it’s worth watching out for. Most modern windows have built-in UV protection to block out ultraviolet rays. But single-pane and older windows generally don’t do this, which means those UV rays are fading items like your furniture and carpets.
SELLING YOUR HOME
Kerb appeal – the first impression a home makes from the outside – can be a real dealbreaker for people looking to buy a house. So if you’re thinking about selling, old, worn windows could decrease the value of your house.
On the flip side, investing in new windows can boost curb appeal and increase the value of your property.
